A consensus first-team All-American and two-time SEC Player of the Year at the University of Tennessee, Ellis was selected ninth overall by Dallas in 1983.
After a 1986 move to Seattle, his scoring rose from 7.1 to 24.9 points per game, earning the 1987 NBA Most Improved Player Award.
Ellis made the 1989 NBA All-Star team, earned All-NBA Third Team honors and won the NBA Three-Point Contest that same year while averaging a career-high 27.5 points per game.
Across 1,209 games, he shot .479 from the field, .403 from three and .784 from the free-throw line. At retirement, his 1,719 career three-pointers ranked second in NBA history.
